E GRANTHALAYA
e-Granthalaya is a library
automation software from National Informatics Centre,
Department of Electronics &
Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information
Technology, Government of India. The software has been designed by a team of
experts from software as well as Library and Information Science discipline.
Using this software the libraries can automate in-house activities as well
as user services. The software can be implemented either in stand-alone or
in client-server mode where database and WebOPAC are installed on the server
PC while the data entry program is installed on client PCs. The software
provides LAN/Web based data entry solutions for a cluster of libraries where
a centralized/Common database can be created with Union Catalog output. The software
provides Web OPAC interface to publish the library catalog over
Internet/Intranet. The software runs on Windows paltform Only, UNICODE
Compliant ,thus, supports data entry in local language..
History
e-Granthalaya
was started as an in-house project at 'Karnataka State Centre of
NIC,Bangalore' and first version of the software was designed for the
Public Libraries in the State. Later, NIC HQs 'Library and Information

library professionals were involved in the designing process and,
thus, improved the software with enhanced user interface and simplify
the work-flow of library functions so that it can suit all kinds of
libraries. Following table shows the release of various versions of

PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
The importance of education in the life of an individual cannot be
overstated. It shapes individuals in their formative years and imbues
them with values that would govern all their choices in life. It is said
‘If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a
decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate
people’. Indeed, one can even say that the quality of education will
determine the destiny of the nation.
For me, Education does not mean providing answers. It means equipping the pupil with the means to find the answers for himself and within himself. Education empowers students to discover themselves – who they are as people. Within each student is a doctor, an engineer, a teacher, a social activist, a sports person, an environmentalist, a poet, an author or an economist. The teachers support them in channelizing resources vis-à-vis their dreams thus, sustainably generating civilized and productive human capital for serving our motherland .

The idea of
encouraging the growth
of Secondary Schools with a
common syllabus and medium of
instruction for the benefit
of the children of Central Government
employees, including
defence personnel
liable to frequent
transfers was first approved
in November, 1962, by the Government
of India. Consequently, Central
Schools Organisation was started
as a unit of the
Ministry of
Education, now Ministry of Human
Resource Development of the
Govt. of India, so that the
education of their children
was not disrupted due to their
frequent and sudden
transfers in public
interest. Initially,
20 Regimental Schools, then
functioning at places having
large concentration of defence
personnel, were taken over as
Central Schools during the
academic year
1963-64.
In 1965, an autonomous body, namely, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan was registered as a Society under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 which took over the task of opening and managing the Central Schools, henceforth called Kendriya Vidyalayas.
Over the years, the number of Kendriya Vidyalayas are growing in numbers nearing the 1000 mark. The Kendriya Vidyalayas have a four-fold mission, namely, to cater to the educational needs of children of transferable Central Government employees including Defence and Para-military personnel by providing a common programme of education; to pursue excellence and set the pace in the field of school education;to initiate and promote experimentation and innovations in education in collaboration with other bodies like the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) etc. and to develop the spirit of national integration and create a sense of 'Indianness' among children.
